Well if you havn't read any of them then i highly reccomend The Hobbit or Fellowship of the Rings, don't get Return of the King or Two towers, you have to read the three books in order, so either Hobbit or FOTR

You should take the Sillmarillion as it will give you all the Middle-Earth knowledge you will need. It will help you to really appreiciate (sp?) all the other books.

Yes, i think ill probably get the sillmarillion to learn about middle earth, then get the other books, so i have some 'inside knowlage' before i start reading the LoTR trilogy.

Yea i dont know, I read the LotR trilogy before any other Tolkien books, and I loved it just the same, I don't think you need any inside knowledge for the trilogy, just my opinion though

You could also take The Hobbit. I found that was a very enjoyable read. It also gave me a picture of how the ring came back into knowledge. But it was a great read.
It is what i took on my holiday with me.
And also what Valandil said. Don`t take those books as you REALLY read the others first. They do have quite a few bits that the films don`t

That is a very good choice. After that i would suggest that you read all the books in the right order.
But thats up to you. ;D
